Yoga leads to purification and integration of mind, body and spirit. It relaxes the practitioners as well as assists them to increase their attention and other cognitive capabilities. Research evidences have demonstrated that yoga asana has incredible impact on the functioning of nervous system. A healthy nervous system keeps all the muscles, organs and tissues of the body fit and work effectively. It sharpens sensory perception and creates a sense of vitality in personality.

The nervous system is composed of huge numbers of individual cells or neurons, each with a cell body and long projecting fibres that transmit rapid nerve impulses or signals. The nervous system enables organisms to sense, organize, and react to information in the environment. The basic unit of the nervous system is neuron. The peripheral nervous system comprises of nerves that are linked to the brain and spinal cord. It contains sensory receptors, which process changes in internal and external stimuli and communicate that information to the CNS.

Understanding the Nervous System and Its Functions

The central nervous system includes the spinal cord and the brain. Key function of the CNS is the integration and processing of sensory information. For transmitting the information, the peripheral nervous system (PNS) takes in information through sensory neurons, then sends it to the central nervous system (CNS) to process.

The peripheral nervous system is subdivided into somatic and automatic nervous system. Somatic nervous system is responsible for receiving external stimuli as well as coordinating the body movements. The autonomic nervous system has an important role in balancing the body’s internal settings (temperature, salt concentration, blood sugar, oxygen and carbon dioxide level in blood, etc). The automatic nervous system is further divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for increasing blood pressure, heart rate that are activated during, fight to flight response. Parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for decreasing the heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate. Through pranayama, parasympathetic nervous system can be activated.

How Yoga Supports Nervous System Health and Function

The nervous system controls the functions of different organs and the activities of the person as a whole. It works through sensation, integration and response, to maintain homeostasis. If peripheral nervous system of an individual is damaged he/she may experience severe pain and it may results in numbness, toughness, and loss of control over the muscles.

There are many factors that lead to good human health such as exercise, proper eating habits, and mental wellbeing. Health and pleasure may be positively governed by proper practicing of yoga. The foundations of yogic philosophy are based on the premise that well maintained and balances nervous system is the core of a fully integrated human beings. In other words, practice of yoga is directly linked to nervous system. The nervous system is a vital structure that affects parts of the body from the organs to the muscles. Yoga for the nervous system helps person to keep a healthy nervous system, to keep the flow of information from and to different body parts and generate awareness about body.

The Role of Asanas and Pranayama in Nervous System Health

According to yogic philosophy, by practicing asanas and pranayama person can gain control over breath and lower heart rate. Through regular practice of yoga, practitioner can consciously activate parasympathetic nervous system and switch body to rest and repair mode which brings optimal health.

The Asanas in yoga cleanses these cells and allow the nervous system to react wisely to stress. The muscles are also able to relax during a time of tension and other negative symptoms produced by adrenaline that pours into the system during “fight or flight” mode are repressed. All of these effects are due to activity within the sympathetic nervous system. It is found that different breathing and yoga practices can affect the automatic nervous system which can lessen heart beat and reduce blood pressure.

Reports of EEG studies have demonstrated that yoga practice increase alpha rhythm, inter-hemispheric coherence and homogeneity in the brain. Alpha rhythm is prominent in awake adults in relaxed state with eyes closed. Fibres which together form the large nerves are stretched and cleansed through yoga Asanas. By clearing toxins from the tissues, the Asanas help neurotransmissions at the fine nerve endings, and at synapses between nerves.

Yoga also stabilize the response of the nervous system to stress, eliminating the constant muscular tension produced by the repeated alerts from the central nervous system, and soothing the involuntary symptoms of threat, sweating, anxiety provoked by the sympathetic nervous system. Yoga techniques especially dhyan and shavasan improves attentiveness, decreases response time or reaction time.

How Pranayama Supports Central Nervous System Function

Yoga practices alter brain blood flow and brain metabolism. Regular practice of yoga alters levels of various neurotransmitters in the brain. Yoga nidra leads to decreased blood flow in prefrontal, cerebellar and subcortical regions, structures thought to be organized in open loops sub-serving executive control. Yoga asanas also have major role in calming the responses of the involuntary nervous system by slowing heart rate and removing anxiety, anger and fear which helps to respond with more equanimity.

Pranayama that help the central nervous system are Surya bhedan which removes obstructions from the path of the sympathetic nervous system which reduces anxiety and improves vitality.

The Benefits of Ujjayi and Kapalabhati for Nervous System Health

Ujjayi and kapal bharati are other breathing exercises that enhance the central nervous system.

Practice of Child’s Pose (Balasana), Seated Spinal Twist Pose (Ardha Matsyendrāsana), Plow Pose (Halasana) stimulate the nervous system.

Read More: 6 Steps of Asanas for healthy Mind and Body

It can be established that practice and repetition of yoga asanas helps in stretching and contracting of muscles and in turn sooths the nervous system.

In concluding significant facts about yogic impact on nervous system, it is understood that Yoga affects every cell of the body.
