Chakras are the energy centres of major parts of human body. The chakra indicates wheel, circle, vortex, or whirlpool. Each chakra in the body has a spin to it and it relates to energy that is produces. The chakras are linked with network of psychic channels, known as nadis, which correspond to the nerves.

The Connection Between Chakras and the Endocrine System in Yoga

It has been revealed in yoga shasthras that the chakras, or energy centres are related to the glands of the endocrine system. The chakras relate to different levels of consciousness, and the hormones secreted by glands and responsible for the cause for person’s state of mind. Actually, the postures, or yoga asanas, immensely affect these glands directly by increasing circulation of blood, as well as massaging and improving their functions in order to maintain balance.

Understanding the Connection Between Chakras and the Endocrine System

Contemporary studies emphasized the connection between each of the primary chakras, the endocrine and nervous systems, as well as organs. On a physical level, chakras are linked with the major nerve plexuses and endocrine glands in the body. Endocrine system is a network of glands which secrete hormones directly into the blood stream instead of a duct to control activity in other parts of the human body. The names of the glands and the chakras are muladhara (adrenal glands), swadhasthana (gondas/ovaries), manipura (spleen/pancreas), anahata (thymus), vishudha (thyroid/parathyroid), ajna (pituitary gland), sahasrara (pineal gland).

How to Balance and Activate Chakras Through Meditation

he perfect condition of chakras is that they all be open and active, and neither underactive (closed) or overactive. If chakras are closed, person can perform meditation to open them again. He/she can sit in meditation and focus on each chakra for 30-40 seconds, one at a time going up, then focus on each one going down, then again going up. This is one round. In this way person can make one more round. While doing this, person will just be in a flow through all chakras, moving the upward and downward current. When chakras are open and active, person should feel more balanced and calm.

If looking at the root or base of the spine, chakra may have masculine spin (clockwise), the next chakra up (The sacral) located near the belly button will spin (Counter clockwise). Therefore it moves the energy to the next chakra which in sequence moves clockwise to person’s solar plexus creating the pattern like the serpent directly towards the top of head. When it reaches at the top it loops back down and creates the pattern of energy that moves along the spin so that each chakra can communicate to next one.

Understanding the Seven Chakras and Their Locations in the Body

There are seven major chakras located along the pathway of sushumna nadi which flows through the centre of the spinal cord. Each of the seven main Chakras are related with one of the seven endocrine glands and also with a particular group of nerves known as Plexus. The endocrine system is composed of ductless glands which has vital role for human health. The glands release hormones directly into blood stream and control all aspects of growth, development and daily activities. The Chakras are related with the glands to create the hormones. Each of the seven chakras has its own distinct character. The chakras correlates to the levels of consciousness, body functions, colours elements, and sounds.

Disturbances in the subtle energy of the chakras results in physical manifestation and symptoms and then to corresponding glands and organs. The energetic dysfunctions in the chakras leads to physiological, psychological, emotional and spiritual disorders.

The Role of Chakras in Maintaining Emotional and Mental Wellness

The seven major chakras are associated with physical, mental and emotional interaction. The connection between the Chakra’s and the glands stresses the holistic nature of health and establishes that person must have to maintain a balance in emotional and mental activities. The function the chakras is very intricate as it is an energy system that connects with the body through biological systems, such as the endocrine glands and nervous system, to keep it balanced.

Read More: Digestive system and yoga effect on it

To encapsulate, chakras are powerful connection between human body, etheric body and source. Chakras are points of energy running along with spine. Each Major Chakra are closely associated with Endocrine Gland. Chakra directly affect these glands. Whenever energy centres is imbalanced or there is a blockage, physical disorders can happen. The disturbance is felt either at the level of that specific or the level of another chakra or set of chakras connected to it.
